Lazy day at the backpackers |
BEN - Very lazy day today.
Very uneventful. It was a
beautiful day, but Sundays seem to mean “be lazy and sit around” here. We sat outside and shot the shit with Sarel,
Andres, and the family. We were able to
see some of Andres’s photos which were absolutely amazing. Kait and Andres are taking over the
restaurant and bar, where Andres will show some of his photography. We
spent a long time brainstorming and trying to come up with a bar
name. Eventually (to Andres dismay)
Gabby came up with the winner; Thirsty Herds.
So it is official, Gabby has named a bar in South Africa. Hopefully Andres keeps his promise and sends
us some complimentary t-shirts or pint glasses with the logo. We wasted the rest of the day away. Eventually dinner rolled around and Gabby
decided to throw something together for those who were interested. She (with me as sous chef) again whipped up a
delicious concoction of spicy, garlic, olive oil sauce over pasta. Soon after eating we headed off to bed; out
laziness exhausting us. I am getting a
bit restless hanging out at the backpackers so much. I wish in our off time we could hike or
explore more around the area, but it is not conducive to such things. We are right on the edge of a beautiful National
Park, but it is tough to utilize.
Tomorrow we may be able to jump on a game drive, so hopefully we will be on
the move again!
Since today was pretty uneventful, I have decided to include some South
African/Afrikaans slang we have learned over the past couple weeks:
One of Addo's local birds |
Oke – bloke, dude, guy “He was a big oke”
What-What – whatnot, whatever “We braiied, played rugby, and what-what”
Kak – Shit, used for anything and everything derogatory “He kaked me
out”, "We talked kak for awhile around the fire"
Hectic – Wild/Crazy “The storm last night was hectic”
Keif – Cool “He is a keif oke”
Dos – Nap or to put to bed by hitting “I’m going to take a dos” or “I
dosed him good”
Minister of Dos - Going to bed first or early from a party. "The new German volunteer was the Minister of Dos during drinking games."
Yesterday – Swear Word “Yesterdaaaaaaaay”
Now – Right this second “I will show you now”
Now Now – Any amount of time, a few minutes to whenever “I will call
him now now”
Just Now – In a second, I’m doing something “I’ll be with you just now”
