Farewell Claire - 12/17/12

Sunset

A final toast (check out my Lesotho socks)
BEN - Today is Claire’s last day at the farm, so after a busy morning chocked full of getting rides out, we decided to take her to the Trout Hatchery for a late lunch.  We sat and chatted/gossiped/bitched.  I had a delicious burger, while the girls each at subpar fish and chips.  On the walk back from lunch, we decided to stop in and see the foals.  Almost immediately Foxy, the foal born just before we got to Khotso, came over and let us scratch her and play.  It is very important to touch and approach horses when they are young so that they get used to human presence.  After awhile, we enticed the baby Puddle, the 2 day old newborn.  Gabby scratched him for a bit.  I took a seat, and he took an interest in me.  He came over and let me completely rub him down; face, neck, back, legs.  It was amazing.  Apparently when you rub a horses’ haunches, it mimics what other horses do, so they try to rub yours.  This resulted in Puddle nibbling and chewing in the air next to me, occasionally rubbing up against my face.  When he finally left after his massage, I was covered in his mother’s milk, which has all over his face.  We shared this in common.  It was truly amazing and disgusting at the same time.

After the horse love, we returned to the backpackers to start dinner.  I fired up the braii while Gabby started the potatoes boiling.  Tonight we would be having chicken burgers and fries.  As dinner was cooking, we could see a spectacular sunset starting to take shape.  I asked Gareth if he could man the braii and finish cooking the chicken.  I grabbed Gabby, Claire, and a few beers and we all ran the one and a half km (beers clinking around in my backpack) up to Mzimkulu Lookout.  As I was just at the top, I spotted a buck with full rack, perfectly silhouetted against the setting sun.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get my camera out quick enough, but it was a breathtaking sight.  Once we reached the top and caught our breath, we worker on our photography skills and toasted to Claire’s final night on the farm.  Claire has really been an awesome friend to have around.  She is a great person and I hope we meet her again somewhere in the world.  After our beer we headed back down in the waning light, ever wary of lurking snakes.  We enjoyed a delicious meal with good company, including Candice, who was here for the night.  After a few beers with Steve and company we headed off to bed.
