The usual center of attention Karoo looks on jealously |
BEN - It is really nice to have Claire around. She is like minded, and a similar age (28)
and both Gabby and I get along well with her.
It’s especially good for Gabby to have a girlfriend around. This afternoon we accompanied Claire to the
corral that houses the pregnant mares and their new born foals. One of the pregnant horses has an eye
infection, so we helped calm her down and feed her as Claire tended to the
eye. We were also able to entice Foxy, a
young foal about 2 months old, to come get scratched by us. It is important to touch foals early and
often to get them used to human contact.
I think Gabby and I might make this a daily chore, because they are just
so damn cute. The baby mule, Maya, is
still super shy, and you can only get a brief scratch on her back once in
awhile before she darts off. The day was
pretty hot, so Gabby and I decided to lay in the backyard and read/write. As we were lounging, Smeagul appeared and
plopped down in our laps! This is
certainly new territory. I can
occasionally approach Smeagul and scratch her gently, but she came over and was
completely submissive today, tail wagging on her back. Crazy.
Maybe a thank you for helping her out when she was sick? After the Smeagul love fest (and shedding), I
decided to run up the hill in the backyard just for some exercise. Karoo followed right at my feels, even
standing with me right at the top, and looking out over the farm, before
sprinting back down. It feels good to
huff and puff and sweat sometimes. I
miss basketball. Luckily, somehow we
had no guests for dinner, so Gabby, Claire, and I decided to go to the Grind
for an evening of dinner and internet.
We all caught up with our technological lives. I was even able to Skype with Dad which was
nice. We had a few beers and headed home
to a blessedly quite backpackers.
