Mzimkhulu Tubing - 12/06/2012

Scares me every time!
GABBY - We woke up around 7:30 and headed down to the backpackers to find that unreserved guests had arrived and checked themselves in last night!  We apologized for not being around to greet them, but the family turned out to be extremely chilled out Canadians.  The daughter of the family was around our age and was total hippy.  She had tattoos, earrings in many places other than the ears and armpit hair that could have been mistaken for Spanish moss.  Her interesting appearance matched her interesting personality.  She was extremely into traveling and was now in the process of studying at Stellenbosch University.  The daughter had spent a lot of time in India and was ecstatic when we told her that that was our next destination.  She gave us some really great advice and some not-so touristy spots to hit up.  I really enjoyed speaking to someone who is enthused about travel and excited about life.  She reminded me of myself after I got back from Cape Town 2 years ago.  We checked them out (I gave the mom a book she wanted from the exchange book shelf for free) and sent them on their way.
Taking a dip

Since it was a gorgeous day, Ben and I decided to go tubing down the Mzimkhulu River.  Allaistar has been overly friendly towards us since Steve left on his trip (probably trying to butter us up so we give him money or alcohol).  He offered to drop us off at the starting point and pick us up at Pebble Beach with Khotso’s rubber tubes.  We slowly plopped ourselves down in our tubes and set off down the river.  We had diverted the reception phone to the cell phone and had that with us in case anyone called.  The water was slow at the start, but picked up quickly as the Little Mzimkhulu merged with the Mzimkhulu River.  As we were hitting some of the biggest rapids, the cell phone rang and Ben answered it in the water.  He almost flipped the tube while he was on the phone with a guest trying to make a reservation.  I was in hysterics and having the time of my life, while Ben was trying to remain composed and professional.  The phone actually rang 3 more times while we were in the river, which was just ridiculous.  We had such a good time lounging on each other, floating down the river, tackling rapids, and soaking up the sun.  Pebble Beach approached way too soon and we were begrudgingly made our way to shore.  We put the tubes on the beach and used them to sit and wait for Allaistar to fetch us.  In the meantime, we played a rock throwing game, which helped to pass the time, even if it was a game that cavemen probably played.  Allaistar showed up with his dog, Jezebel (Jess) shortly after we got out of the river and drove us back to Khotso.  A little bit later, we greeted the homecoming of the Lesotho trip.  Steve was completely fried and delirious, so we held down the fort for the rest of the evening while he took a much needed dos.  The three women reflected on their trip and told us little snippets from their experiences.  Steve seemed to have his hands full with Hannah, who took all of her clothes off multiple times and jumped in the pools naked.  She is a tad bit obsessed with Steve, so he had to play defense for the majority of the trip.  We also were informed that one of the women who went on the trip, Claire, was actually going to stay at Khotso and volunteer.  She is extremely knowledgeable about horses and has ridden for most of her life, so she was going to help the Zulu staff take rides and manage the horses.  She seemed pretty normal, so I was excited for an extra pair of hands on staff!  I made Chicken Parmesan for dinner, which was a huge success.  Ben and I retired to our cave at the end of the hall.
